Matney Family

Agnes Salathiel Hall

Ancestors of Nancy Matney

This image is actually a photo of one of Nancy Matney's descendants. This is Agnes Salathiel Hall. Agnes wrote a manuscript about her family history. I will share this manuscript at a later time. I was unable to find an image that would relate to the Matney family, so I thought that showing someone who had an interest in the Matney history.

Walter Matney was born between 1735 and 1747 in Prince George's County, Maryland. About 1770 he married Mary "Polly" Unknown (one source says her maiden name may have been Smith). In her manuscript, Agnes claimed that Walter's wife was Jemima Morris.

Walter Matney and Polly had at least 5 sons, Brooks, Walter Jr., William, Charles, and John. Most sources say that Brooks was the oldest child of Walter and Polly. Walter and his family were living in Montgomery County, Virginia when he enlisted in the Militia under Captain William Bobbits about 1782.

Brooks Matney was born about 1772 in Virginia. Brooks is found on the 1789 tax list for Washington County, Virginia. December 23, 1794 Brooks married a daughter of Daniel Young, "Jennit". The ceremony was performed by Nicholas Reagan.
